Exploration Group Presents: How The Music Business Works (second Edition)
Back to Home Page |See more details on “Everything You Need to Know About the Music Business: 10th E…” Back to Top Everything You Need to Know About the Music Business by veteran music attorney Don Passman – called “the industry bible” by the Los Angeles Times – is now being updated to address the music industry’s biggest transformation yet: streaming.
For over twenty-five years, Everything You Need to Know About the Music Business has been universally regarded as the definitive guide to the music industry. Now in its tenth edition, Donald Passman guides novices and experts alike through what has been the most profound change in the music industry since the days of wax cylinders and piano rolls. For the first time in history, music is no longer monetized by selling something – it’s monetized by how many times listeners stream a song. And that completely changes the company’s ecosystem, as Passman explains in detail.
From the advent of file sharing technology in the late 1990s to the creation of the iPod, the music industry has been on the brink of a major transformation – and with the latest move to music streaming, this change is finally come Passman’s comprehensive guide offers timely, authoritative information on how to select and hire a winning team of consultants and structure their commissions and fees; navigate the ins and outs of record deals, songwriting, publishing and copyrights; maximize concert, touring, and merchandising deals; and how the game is played in a streaming world.
“If you want to be in music, you need to read this book,” says Adam Levine, lead singer and guitarist of Maroon 5. With his proven track record, this updated edition of All You Need to Know About the Music Business more essential than ever for musicians, songwriters, lawyers, agents, promoters, publishers, directors and managers – anyone trying to navigate the industry’s rapid transformation.
Donald Passman Talks New Edition Of His Music Business Book
The good news is that streaming is growing at an amazing pace. And that’s about it for the good news.
CD sales are below 25% of the company and falling. Downloads have fallen by 15% per year in recent years. Piracy is alive and well, hidden under cyber rocks, and YouTube provides more audio-only music than all other sites combined (including the pirate sites), for which the creators are paid very little (we’ll talk more about that later). All in all, industry revenues are almost half of what they were in 2003. Also, we are going through a major upheaval in the songwriting world that could radically change the industry.
On the brighter front, we’re seeing huge growth in vinyl (for younger people, it’s a new technology; go figure) that’s only being sustained because every vinyl plant on the planet is at full capacity. The bad news is that it is less than 2% of the company. But in the current state of affairs, we’ll take what we can get.
Now if you’re reading this and trying to decide if the music business is going to disappear and if you’d better put the price of this book in your stamp collection, there’s actually a wonderful forecast. As we will discuss, streaming has the potential to make the music business bigger than it has ever been in history. People who have never gone into a record store are listening to streams, and the numbers are growing fast. So stick around (and buy the book).
The 10 Best Music Industry Books To Read
If these new ways of exploiting music take hold, you may wonder how artists get paid. Well, my friend, you have come to the right place. The book in your hands has the latest scoop on all these newly minted gizmos. And at no extra charge (if you act DIRECT), there’s an update on what’s happening with traditional music business deals—recording, songwriting, merchandising, touring, and so on.
