Stacy Blackman, founder of Stacy Blackman Consulting, helps clients get into top MBA programs. She holds a BA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Based on ten years of helping clients get into Harvard, her team has compiled a list of 10 qualities that will help you stand out to the admissions committee:
“Past leadership success is the best measure of your potential to achieve your future goals,” Blackman writes in the Harvard Conversation Guide.

You need to provide strong evidence that you have made the change. It’s not all about the scale of your achievements, Blackman writes, but rather “the fact that you left an indelible mark.”
As with leadership, the committee is concerned with the connection between your achievements and how they reflect who you are. There are two reasons community service is important, Blackman writes:
“The central question in any HBS case is not ‘what do you think?’ but ‘what are you going to do?'” Blackman wrote.
It’s all about results. Your thinking skills and ability to analyze the situation are important, but you have to take it more than that. The committee wants “evidence that you have applied your research, developed a plan of action, and most importantly, implemented the plan.”

Passion is a useful tool to stay motivated and productive, whether it’s in school or business. But it goes much deeper than being passionate about what you do. You need to express your passion in a way that inspires and projects energy on those you work with, Blackman writes.
“You’re not the only one interested in getting into HBS,” she said. “They also want to see the footsteps of those who follow you as you break new ground in an area of interest.”
Case studies allow students to analyze and make decisions in real-world simulations, and HBS is almost entirely dedicated to using them, Blackman wrote.
Characteristics that admissions committees look for in candidates include common sense, exceptional communication skills, respect for the opinions of others, and the ability to teach and learn from peers, Blackman wrote.

While it’s important to demonstrate your accomplishments and abilities to the admissions committee, it’s just as important that you show what you’ve learned from each experience.
“Self-awareness is not a quality you demonstrate through storytelling,” Blackman writes. “Rather, it has to do with how you tell a story and your ability to communicate what you’ve learned.”
With a mission to “educate leaders to make a difference in the world,” HBS isn’t looking for candidates who just want to improve, Blackman wrote. If you’re applying to Harvard, you have to “think big.”
Integrity is more than respect. It is more than any single attribute. Integrity is a combination of character, Blackman writes. She published these characteristics from the book of Dr. Henry Cloud “Integrity” which includes this value: it creates trust, fearlessness of the truth, consequences, dealing with the bad truth, leads to growth, and finding meaning in life.

You’ll want to show how you responded in ethical dilemmas to “give evidence of honesty, integrity, and skill in navigating ethical dilemmas,” Blackmansays.
You need to show enthusiasm and the ability to create a new conversation or idea. Any situation where you’ve taken on a voluntary role, rather than being offered something, is worth discussing with the admissions committee, Blackman wrote.
Instead of focusing on how long you’ve been doing something, show how you’ve grown—from your values to the way you look at the world.

Harvard said, “There is no such thing as a Harvard student.” The admissions process gives each individual attention to each application. However, on their website, they say what is on their mind when looking at student applications. These four things they look for in a student:
While looking at your application, 12 questions will come to mind. These questions are primarily about what is your growth and potential so far? How can you grow? Have you used your time? Therefore, the college can take into account everything you have done in your academic life.
Most colleges consider what a student has done outside of the classroom. Similarly, the Harvard admissions staff will also remember what you did as your interests and activities. They want to know what achievements you have had in the works you have done. You should share your experience no matter success or failure.
Here, some of the questions asked here will come from “What choice did you make for yourself?” to “How open are you to new ideas and people?” This is where Harvard wants to see who you are. You can’t do something and pretend to be someone else that they will later find out is fake.
